Cars are still the most common form of transport for commuters.

70 percent of people in Waterford drive to work.

The latest CSO census stats on commuting are out revealing increases in car, rail, bus and bike usage amongst workers between 2011 and 2016.

Cars are still the top choice for workers with 7 out of 10 people using the car to get to work in rural areas.

In April 2016 just 395 people in Waterford cycled to work.

There have been significant increases in cycling but the majority of cyclists are in Dublin city and suburbs with nearly 39 thousand people taking the bike to work.

While walkers account for almost ten percent of the commuting population.

Staying with walking – it is the most popular choice for just over a quarter of third level students, with just under a quarter taking the bus followed by those who drive to college.

Commuter numbers for both workers and students totalled almost 3 million in April 2016 – an increase of 9.3 per cent on the 2011 figure and an increase of 62 per cent over the 30 year period since 1986.
