Beat the Street challenge is underway in Waterford City and County.

Beat the Street challenge is underway in Waterford City and County.

A new sports programme is seeking to get Waterford's young and old out-and-about walking and cycling.

Beat the Street is a free challenge running in Waterford city, Dungarvan, Kilmacthomas and parts of the Greenway until November, where those who take part are rewarded with points and prizes for exploring their community on foot or bicycle.

Nearly eighty special accessible sensors called ‘Beat Boxes’ will appear across the city and county over the coming weeks as part of the programme, similar to the Pokemon Go computer game.

Players can pick up their own Beat the Street card and map in their locality and start swiping as many Beat Boxes as possible to receive points and win prizes.

Adult players can also register to join.

Sports Coordinator at Waterford Sports Partnership, Rosarie Kealy says it's about getting people moving.
