Waterford woodcarver chainsaws his way into the world records

Waterford wood carver John Hayes has won a world record at the National Ploughing Championships.

John has carved a 23 metre long Viking sword from a single piece of wood.

The carving tells the story of the history of the Vikings, and is expected to become a fixture in Waterford's Viking Triangle when it leaves Tullamore.

John and his team at Special Branch Carvings began the project in July.

It was confirmed as the world's longest carved Viking sword this morning.

John said it was an emotional day for him, and he was thrilled to bring a world record back to Waterford.
