Kilmeaden Post office to close 'temporarily'

Kilmeaden Post office to close 'temporarily'

The Kilmeaden Post Office is to close on a temporary basis.

The decision comes as part of An Post's review of the national post office network.

This closure is due to the resignation of the former postmaster and not due to any review of demand or need.

No indication has been given as to when the branch will be reopened.

Waterford Fianna Fáil TD, Mary Butler said the decision to close the Post Office was "a slap in the face to the local community who have been local users over the past number of years".

She said it constitutes a major threat to the local community.

“I find it very hard to believe that once closed An Post would then decide to reopen it after a strategic review."

Fianna Fail councillor for the area, John O'Leary, said it will have a huge impact on the community.

He said it was "devastating news".

Locals have previously protested against plans to close the office.

David Cullinane, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, said it was a worrying and regrettable development.

He said he would be "raising this issue with the Minister as a matter of urgency."
