Helvick Lifeboat assists in bringing crewman to safety.

A fisherman with a suspected broken leg was taken by the Coast Guard Helicopter to University Hospital Waterford last night.

The Helvick Head RNLI Lifeboat traveled 12 miles out to sea to assist.

The Lifeboat crew of Alan Kelly, Paudie Walsh, Shay Young and Joe Foley assisted in the transfer of the casualty from the vessel to the helicopter.

Press Officer Donal O'Faolain says the Robert Armstrong lifeboat has the capability of reaching distances well out to sea.

The Atlantic 85 can set to sea in winds of up to force seven, stay out for a maximum of three hours, do a top speed of 35 knots and carry up to four crew.

It has enhanced communication, radar, and direction-finding equipment.
