Mobile cath lab 'must be used' to strengthen case for second permanent facility

The Taoiseach says the case for a second permanent cath lab at University Hospital Waterford will be strengthened if sufficient numbers use the exisiting mobile facility.

The mobile cath lab has been in situ at UHW for a month now.

Speaking in the Dail, Waterford TD David Cullinane sought an update on when a new national review of cardiac services will take place.

The Minister for Health met the Waterford Oireachtas members before the summer recess and committed to a national review, carried out by an international expert.

The Sinn Fein Deputy queried if an expert had been found and if terms of reference had been set for the national review.

Although the Taoiseach did not address the issues surrounding the progress of the national review in the Dail, Leo Varadkar said if the mobile cardiac unit reduced wait times for patients, it would bolster the case for a permanent facility.
