Senator Paudi Coffey has been selected as a candidate for Fine Gael in Waterford.

Senator Paudi Coffey has been selected as a candidate for Fine Gael in Waterford.

Current sitting TD John Deasy was not at the Fine Gael Constituency selection in Dungarvan last night.

He is at the moment in Washington on Government business. He is also recovering from hip replacement surgery.

His name did not go forward at the convention and it was revealed last night that he is not a paid member of the party.

Three candidates were nominated, Senator Paudie Coffey, Cllr John Cummins and Cllr Damien Geoghegan.

Subsequently Damien Geoghegan withdrew his nomination.

The directive was then received from Fine Gael Executive Council that only one candidate would be selected and Senator Paudie Coffey was chosen.

He says he is delighted to have been chosen but is hoping there will not be a pre-christmas election.

The Executive Council has the power to add further candidates and will be meeting Tuesday night to confirm if another will be added to the ticket.

John Cummins says he believes the party should have a strong candidate in Waterford City and that is why he put his name forward.

He thinks it's important that Fine Gael is returned to power with a strong mandate if there is an election.
