Defence forces to conduct flooding exercises in Waterford today

The defence forces are to conduct a series of exercises in Waterford later this morning in preparation for emergency weather events.

The scenario will be based around a local reponse to flooding along the River Suir and the Coastline, with exercises to take place in Tramore and Carrick.

The event will be carried out in co-operation with Local Authority, Gardai, Fire Service, Civil Defence and HSE.

Second Lieutenant Pat Tobin is with the 3rd battalion stationed in Kilkenny.

"We've seen some poor weather recently, flooding in Laois, flooding in Donegal over the summer and Storm Ophelia...our aids to the civil authorities are becoming more in demand, so we will show the civil authorities the civil defence, fire service, HSE, Gardai what our actual capabilities are".

He says the military will be demonstrating their equipment and sharing expertise.
