Making a very welcome return to the marquee this year is Gavin James who will take to the stage on Saturday 16 June 2018. Tickets go on sale this Friday 9 February at 9am.
Following a whirlwind 20 months since the release of his debut album ‘Bitter Pill’ which saw Gavin James sell over 2 million singles worldwide, amass over half a billion streams on Spotify alone and perform over 500 shows to over 3.2 million people at festivals and sold out tours across US, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia, Gavin James has established himself as one of the leading breakthrough Irish artists of the past year. Given his captivating live performances, it’s no surprise Gavin James has found fans in many of his fellow musical peers and; as a result, has been invited to support acts including Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Niall Horan amongst others, as well as being invited to collaborate on tracks with Alan Walker (on the summer smash ‘Tired’) and on Australian Hip Hop act Bliss n Eso’s Aria Award winning and multi platinum single ‘Moments’. There’s no doubt from all the achievements outlined above alongside his smash hit ‘Nervous’ hitting No.1 everywhere from Holland to Brazil, that the foundations have been set for Gavin James to become a global superstar in 2018 and beyond.
Having started out playing Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin covers in the garden shed, Gavin James drew the short straw when he was chosen as the singer of his teenage band, and learnt his subsequent solo craft the hard way. Inspired by local heroes like Damien Rice and classic, grafting Soul artists such as Sam Cooke, he would play Dublin’s pubs virtually 7 nights a week during college, in a marathon of 3-hour shows. Growing in confidence, his own material then began to draw an impassioned following: Gavin’s first ever single won the Choice Prize for ‘Song Of The Year’, stayed on the charts for over 6 months and culminated with 2014’s #1-charting, ‘Live at Whelans’ album: a venue he used to sneak inside when underage, but returned to as a rapturously-received headliner. Gavin James released his eagerly-anticipated debut album, ‘Bitter Pill’ on March 11 2016 – reaching Top 5 status, certified Platinum and winner of Choice Music Prize’s ‘Song of the Year’ in Ireland in 2013 and 2016. The first single from Gavin’s new album (due out in May) Hearts on Fire can be currently heard on the airwaves in Ireland and America.
CHIC featuring NILE RODGERS:
An amazing live show from the greatest dance band in the world, CHIC is guaranteed to get the party going and have audiences up on their feet once again this year when they return to play Live at the Marquee Cork on Sunday 17 June 2018. Tickets go on sale this Friday 9February at 9am.
Considered one of the greatest live bands, CHIC’s sound is undoubtedly defined by the rhythm guitar and musicianship of Nile Rodgers, resulting in some of the biggest dance hits of all time.Among music legends, Nile Rodgers is truly exceptional. He amplifies his legacy as a Grammy-winning composer, producer, arranger, and guitarist by constantly traversing new musical terrain and successfully expanding the boundaries of popular music. As the co-founder of CHIC, Rodgers pioneered a musical language that sparked the advent of hip-hop with “Good Times,” distinguished CHIC as the “most sampled band in history” (The Guardian, 2011), won CHIC nine Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations, and generated groundbreaking pop hits like “Le Freak,” which was inducted into the 2015 Grammy Hall of Fame. His career-defining productions for David Bowie (Let’s Dance), Madonna (Like A Virgin), Diana Ross (diana), and Sister Sledge (We Are Family), plus his work with artists like Duran Duran, INXS, Mick Jagger, Grace Jones, Steve Winwood, Peter Gabriel, The B-52s, and Michael Jackson, have sold over 200 million albums and 50 million singles worldwide while his innovative, trendsetting collaborations with Daft Punk, Avicii, Disclosure, and Sam Smith reflect the vanguard of contemporary music.
On 2 July 2018 Jack Johnson will take to the stage of the marquee for his only Irish date as part of his, All The Light Above It Too, World Tour. This will be his first Irish show in 12 years, Jack last performed here in 2006. Tickets for this date go on sale this Thursday 8 February at 9am.
Jack Johnson grew up surfing and playing guitar in Hawaii. Since 2001, he has released 7 studio albums and 2 live albums that have sold over 25 million copies
worldwide. Jack’s latest album, All The Light Above it Too, released in September 2017 debuted #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. His Brushfire Records label and touring crew have been leaders in the greening of the music industry and his All At Once social action network connects fans with local non-profits at each tour stop. Jack, with his wife Kim, founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation to support environmental education in Hawaii’s schools and communities, as well as the Johnson Ohana Foundation to support environmental, art and music education worldwide.
Johnson’s album, tour profits, and personal philanthropic activities have resulted in over $30 million donated to charity since 2001. For the first time since 2014, Johnson hit the road for his All The Light Above it Too tour, stopping at scenic venues across North America, South America, Australia and New Zealand.
After their worldwide hugely successful 3-D concert tours, the Electro pioneers Kraftwerk will play Live at the Marquee Cork on 11 July 2018, their only Irish date. Tickets go on sale this Thursday 8 February at 9am.
Bringing together music and performance art, Kraftwerk 3-D concerts are a true “Gesamtkunstwerk – a total work of art.” In January 2018 Kraftwerk won a Grammy (best dance/electronic album) for “3-D The Catalogue,” a high-tech recreation of their back albums. The multi-media project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums. By the mid 1970s Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic‚ sound scapes and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations. With their visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century. Their compositions, using innovative techniques, synthetic voices and computerised rhythms, have had a major international influence across an entire range of music genres: from Electro to Hip Hop, from Techno to SynthPop. In their live performances, Kraftwerk – Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert, Falk Grieffenhagen – illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine. Starting with the retrospective of their Catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012, in recent years Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties. The 3-D concert series at MoMA was followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall (London), Akasaka Blitz (Tokyo) Opera House (Sydney), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris), Neue National Galerie (Berlin) and Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao). In 2014 Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
