Waterford Council is to take steps to meet it's renewable energy obligations.

The government set out a number of measures to address climate change in it's Ireland 2040 plan, which include the upgrading of 45,000 homes, a Renewable Heat Support Scheme and low emission public transport.

If Ireland fails to meet EU targets, we could be fined up to 4 hundred and 50 million euro.

Fianna Fail's Adam Wyse said other local authorities have been pro-active in addressing renewable targets.

He said that the taxpayer will lose out unless targets are met.

In response, Council CEO Michael Walsh said that one of the first steps they'll be taking is the installation of LED public lighting.
