Viking Festival underway in Waterford

Waterford City has been transformed this weekend for the first International Viking Festival and Roadshow.

Re-enactors have recreated the Viking town of Waterford with over 50 events taking place between today, tomorrow and Monday.

Visitors to Waterford City will be able to experience the authentic atmosphere of a Viking village in the heart of the Viking Triangle in Cathedral Square from 5-9pm today, 12-6pm tomorrow and 12-5pm on Monday. There will be leather work, basket weaving, blacksmith, coin-striking, woodwork, spinning and weaving.

On Sunday, the Vikings will leave Cathedral Square for a shieldwall battle at 1.30pm and 4.00pm. Firebreathing stilt-walking drummers from Spain will perform at the Dragon Slayer Sword the world’s longest wood sculpture in Baileys New Street.

There's also events in the Medieval Museum.

The festival culminates in spectacular night time Viking Roadshow on Easter Monday, there will be two performances of a 45 minute theatrical reimagining of the Vikings using music, dance and poetry all set against the largest atmospheric video backdrop ever mounted in Ireland. The Roadshow will be performed by a large number of international artists in the new covered outdoor performance area in the Apple Market in the centre of historic Waterford.
