Waterford councillor calls for extension of choice-based letting scheme for social housing

Waterford councillor calls for extension of choice-based letting scheme for social housing

Speaking at a recent meeting of the local authority, Independent Joe Kelly highlighted the success of choice based letting and wanted to know if the scheme could be extended.

"There were 79 properties offered with 5,971 bids," he said. "It seems to be a successful method of trying allocate houses, can we accelerate that, or is there some rule that holds us back?"

Cllr. Kelly also wanted to know when the tenant's handbook was last updated.

"Is it updated every year, or two years, or five years? Just in terms of what's responsibility for repairs for council, an indeed what responsibilty falls to the tenants themselves."

Director of Housing Ivan Grimes says more properties will be added to the choice-based scheme in time.

"The intention is to put more and more houses on the choice based letting scheme," he said. "The tenants handbook is reviewed periodically. We keep it under ongoing review and if there are suggestions for amendments, we're more than happy to consider them."
