LISTEN BACK: Waterford TD Mary Butler wont stand in the way of legislating abortion

Fianna Fail Spokesperson for Older People and Public Health Promotion and Waterford TD Mary Butler has said she will not "oppose" the bill that will legalise abortion.

Speaking to Eamon she said: " The people have spoken and they have spoken quite clearly that's what they want now going forward and I know I was on the no side of the campaign but I have no regrets for being on the no side because it was something I fundamentally believed in."

Deputy Butler said that she will "certainly" listen to the people and will not obstruct the bill going forward and the reason the no side lost so badly was that there was no alternative offered.

"We probably should have offered an alternative two or three months ago because I did quite a lot of canvassing as well and listening to people on the doors, there were huge concerns around rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormalities and I suppose the no campaign only offered the status quo to continue which we know wasn't right."

The Waterford TD explained to Eamon that there was no "doubt" that we were exporting an Irish problem across the seas and she believes that is one of the main reasons why the no campaign lost.
