A number of Waterford members of the Defence Forces are on overseas duty in Syria at the moment.
The Irish troops are part of the UN-DOF observer force who are deployed to the Golan Heights, which is an area of separation between Israel and Syria.
Former Waterford Senior Hurler, Commandant Stephen Molumphy, says their task is to observe, monitor and report any breaches by both sides and to protect UN observers.
He says they are well equipped and trained for the mission.
