It could be 2020 before Weatherspoons opens in Waterford City.
The pub chain was granted planning permission to develop two adjoining buildings on Broad Street and Arundel Square in November of 2016.
It's believed that the company is looking to set up two pubs in Dublin, before they turn ther attention to Waterford.
Councillor Eddie Mulligan told WLR News that he's been in touch with management about their plans and says it could be at least 18 months before they open.
He says the company recently carried out cleaning works on the premises in Waterford City centre.
The Fianna Fail Councillor says that other companies have reported interest in the building.
"It will be unoccupied for 18 months. There are investors in the hospitality area that are looking at Waterford and this may pre-empt Wetherspoons into faster action..people are looking at the plans we have in Waterford...certainly Waterford at the moment is attracting national and international attention."
