Bee hotels for the Waterford Greenway

Bee hotels for the Waterford Greenway

The Waterford Greenway will have a whole new buzz about it later this summer when up to one hundred bee hotels are added to the trail.

Men’s Sheds across Waterford have partnered with the local authority to help deliver the Greenway's pollination and biodiversity project.

Andrew Power is the secretary of Deise Men's Shed in Ballybeg as well as being a regional co-ordinator for Men's Sheds Ireland.

He says the hotels are designed to provide sanctuary for insects.

"They're like a waven pipe with bamboo cane inside them. The idea is the bees crawl into the bamboo and lay their offspring and eventually they hatch into new bees, and that cycle repeats itself... hopefully the Men's Sheds will do their bit to help invigorate the bee population".

Andrew says the shed is open to collaborating with more institutions and businesses in future.
