A planning application has been made for a runway extension at Waterford Airport

A planning application has been made for an extension to the runway at Waterford Airport.

The current length of 1400 metres would be extended to 2,200 and it would be widened from 30 to 45 metres.

Waterford Sinn Fein Deputy David Cullinane said this would enable the Airport to operate international flights.

"We have known for some time that there was work being done behind the scenes with a number of potential private sector investors and local authorities from across the region, to fund a runway extension," he said.

"It that (the application) is successful, then obviously that's great news - it will open up Waterford Airport to destinations not just in Britain, but also in Europe as well."
