Mount Sion and Roanmore book Quarter-Final spots in Co. Senior Hurling Championship

The opening Co. Senior hurling Championship Quarter-Final play-offs proved to be a hard fought battle as Mount Sion put in a strong second half performance to see of a battling An Rinn outfit.

Austin Gleeson hit thirteen points as Mount Sion survived a late scare to see off An Rinn 0-21 to 2-13 in the curtain raiser at Fraher Field.

Donie and Christy Breathnach fired second half goals but the Monastery men hung on for a narrow win. Gleeson struck an injury time point to book their spot in the last eight.

Speaking to WLR Sport after the final whistle, the Sion captain said that An Rinn made them battle all the way to the finish.

Austin said there was a few stern words in the dressing rooms at the break.

Austin told Tomás McCarthy he's gradually coming back to full fitness.

The second game had no shortage of drama as Roanmore and Fourmilewater played out a marathon eighty plus minutes of hurling before the Sky Blues prevailed thanks a late free from Gavin O' Brien, 1-22 to 3-15 the final score after extra-time.

The Sky Blues trailed by seven points after eight minutes and lost goalkeeper Billy Nolan to injury but came good in the additional twenty minutes to qualify for the quarter finals.
Roanmore boss Laurence O'Neill praised the spirit of his charges.
He also credited the impact of sub keeper Jack Chester.
He said it was one of the sweetest victories he's enjoyed with the Sky Blues.
