Councillors seek to get religious orders to enter negotiations on vacant school buildings in Tramore.

A Tramore Councillor has called on Waterford City and County Council to enter negotiations with the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore over the old Stella Maris and CBS buildings in the town.

It's been vacant for the past four years after two of the town's schools amalgamated.

Councillors previously approved a motion in July for the Education Minister to secure a permanent residence for an Educate Together school for Tramore, with the hope that the former Stella Maris property would be used.

But Fine Gael's Lola O'Sullivan says the council has had little success with Minister Richard Bruton and believes they now need to contact the religious order that owns the building.

She says there hasn't been enough communication from the religious orders so far.
