25 new garda recruits are to begin duty across Waterford City and County over the Christmas period.

10 recruits will be kept on at Waterford City Station in the New Year, with the rest to be dispersed throughout the County.

Waterford Metropolitan Mayor Joe Kelly gave credit to Chief Superintendent Pádraig Dunne for securing the new staff.

"He's been pushing for that," he said, "he's a Waterford man himself and he pushes for his home team, as he calls it."

Mayor Kelly, who is also in business in the City, says the manpower is "badly needed".

"From the days when we were constantly losing gardaí, we're now back to a time when we're starting to get them back again."

Superintendent Michael Lacey from Dungarvan station says he hopes the trend of hiring continues as it gives gardaí an opportunity to put resources where "they can have the most effect."
