A man remains in Garda custody this morning in connection with the death of a man in Waterford.

A murder investigation is now underway following a fatal assault in County Waterford yesterday.

Gardai have set up an incident room in Tramore Garda Station, where a man remains in custody this morning in connection with the death of a man in Portlaw.

The victim of the assault lived alone in the Coolfinn Meadows housing estate in Portlaw.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 2.45pm. The victim who has been named locally as John Lowe was taken to University Hospital Waterford by ambulance,
but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Gardai were initially treating it as a serious assault but upgraded the case to a murder investigation.

The suspect was arrested at the scene by Gardaí .

A post-mortem is due to be performed on the body of the victim today at University Hospital Waterford.
