Seven people are in Garda custody in Waterford tonight, in connection with an investigation into a suspected plot to commit murder in another country.
The operation - across Counties Waterford and Cork - followed co-operation between authorities here, Europe and the United States.
It's believed the intended victim of the conspiracy was the Swedish cartoonists Lars Vilks
His cartoon depicting the Prophet's Mohammad head on a dog caused outrage when published by a newspaper in Sweden.
An Al-Qaeda leader had offered a hundred thousand dollars for anyone who killed him.
However Superintendent John Gilligan of the Garda Press Office refused to confirm that today.
This morning, detectives arrested three men and two women in Waterford and Tramore and another man and woman at Ballincollig, near Cork city.
It's understood those arrested may have links to north Africa and the Middle-East while another is thought to be a muslim convert from a European country.
They are being held for questioning under Section 50 of Criminal Justice Act 2007 at garda stations across Waterford.
A new research poll shows ninety one percent of people in Waterford agree that termination of pregnancy should be permitted if the pregnancy seriously endangers the woman's life.
The poll by Marie Stopes Reproductive Choices says as a result of irish law almost one in ten Irish pregnancies ends in an English abortion clinic.
Gabrielle Malone, the programme director of Marie Stopes Reproductive choices in Ireland says the poll results in Waterford are higher than the national average.
She says the government should respond to the shift in public opinion regarding abortion.
Gardai in Waterford say there was no attempted abduction of a child in Ferrybank last week.
A newspaper report today says a woman in the area had claimed that the child had gone missing from the back garden of their house and the gardai had brought the child home.
Gardai have investigated the matter and the woman has admitted that the
facts as stated at the time are untrue.
The two year old girl had been missing for a short time after going underneath fencing in the garden but gardai had not been informed of the incident.
A Waterford City Councillor says he is confident that the Ferrybank Shopping Centre will be a success if the developers open it.
Deerpark Developers had intended to open the Shopping Centre in October of last year, however this has been delayed as the anchor retailers Dunnes Stores have yet to move in.
The centre is expected to create 800 new jobs when it gets up and running and Workers Party City Councillor Davy Walsh says he is confident it would be a success.
He says however, there is specualtion that the Shopping Centre could be acquired by NAMA.

A well know County Waterford pub has been destroyed by fire.
Emergency services were alerted to the fire at the County Waterford thatched pub shortly after one o clock yesterday afternoon.
7 units of Waterford City and County Fire Brigade tackled the blaze for a number of hours which completely gutted the premesis.
It's not yet known how the fire started but it could have been caused by a spark from the chimney.
The fire quickly spread to the roof which was between four and five feet thick. This made it very difficult for firefighters to quench the fire.
A tanker from Dunmore East Fire Service had to be drafted in to bring water to the scene while another fire engine brought water from a nearby stream. The fire was managed by incident commander Austin Carroll, Dunmore East.
The bar was open when the fire broke out however no one was hurt in the incident.

Three Ireland is ready to switch on its broadband service for remote parts of rural
Waterford.
The company was tasked by the government to roll out a broadband service for all areas
of the country without provision.
Waterford is one of the first counties to go live with the new service.
A number of the masts Three are hoping to build in Waterford have been refered to An Bord Pleanala but Brian Purcell, spokesperson from Three, insists the public has nothing to fear.
