With a team of 5 people, the newsroom in WLRfm is nothing if not fast paced.
It is the enormously strong slant on local stories and issues that has been central to the success of the team.
"The time that you spend reading the news is perhaps the calmest five minutes you get. The rest of the time you're running around answering phones, chasing up stories and getting people who might not want to talk to you to talk to you" says journalist Mark Power.
Asked what the aim of the news department is at the station Liz Reddy throws her hands wide open and says "everything". Expanding on that she says "we concentrate solely on local news, the national and international news we get from our agency in Dublin. Everything that happens in the community such as politics and human interest stories, basically if it happens in Waterford it is our job to know about it. Over the last 17 years it has built up. Obviously we are looking for stories, but now we are top of people's lists to get a story on our news. We have gotten a lot busier, the local content has risen constantly." The news team provide Waterford with some of the most detailed coverage that it would be hard to find elsewhere. It is no wonder that it is first in it's field?
