The State has wrapped up its case against Waterford bus driver John O'Brien, who's accused of murdering his wife Meg Walsh. Today was the 14th day of the trial, which is well into its third week. 41 year old O'Brien denies murdering the 35 year old mother of one between the 1st and 15th of October 2006. The jury has been sent away until Tuesday. Meg Walsh disappeared on the 1st of October 2006, some hours after she was caught by her husband kissing Owen Walsh at their home in the early hours of the morning. The court has heard that John O’Brien never reported her missing, he said he spoke to her that evening and heard her leave at 8.30 but that she'd done this before. Her body was discovered in the River Suir by the quay in Waterford, two weeks later, she had sustained at least two blows to the head with a heavy object. The court has heard during this trial that John O’Brien lied to Gardai about his whereabouts on the day she disappeared and the following night. He eventually admitted going to the quay in Waterford that day but insisted he was there for fresh air and not looking for a spot to dump her body. He admitted to being a wife beater and to an assault on Meg Walsh just 11 days before her disappearance. Mr Justice Barry White sent the jury away until Tuesday telling them the defence would be making an application to him tomorrow to have the case thrown out.
