Man arrested for failing to assist Waterford woman who drowned in Lanzarote.
A man has been arrested in Lanzarote following the death of 41 year old Waterford woman Elaine O'Donovan earlier this week.

Ms O'Donovan, who was originally from Viewmount, tragically drowned while on holiday with her parents.

Elaine O'Donovan had gone for a late night swim on Playa Grande after a night out when she got into difficulty and tragically drowned.

Police in Lanzarote yesterday arrested a 29 year old man on suspicion of failing to assist her.

Reports from the Canary Island say the man who had been with her on the beach had failed in his duty to help her or to ask others for help. There is no suggestion he had wanted her to come to harm.

Civil guard investigators arrested him following a search and he is understood to have been released on bail pending an investigation.

Elaine O'Donovan was an environmental engineer and had been living in London in recent years.
