Waterford County Council is owed almost 10 million euro in unpaid levies, rents and charges.
Local authorities across the country have been told crack down on defaulting residents and firms in a bid to recoup 500 million euro owed to them.
Figures in today's Irish Examiner show the Waterford County Council has arrears totalling 9.7 million euro including 3.7 million owed from Government grants.
The Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government said charges and the collection of debts was a matter for each council.
While Minister John Gormley urged all local authorities to collect all charges which are due to them in a timely and efficient manner.
However Waterford County Council say the information printed relates to the end of November, 2009 and was supplied to the Irish Examiner last year.
"As a consequence, the information, while factually correct last November, is not very relevant at present and does not reflect the end of year status of the Council’s collection accounts."
They say "balances in November do not provide a true indication of collection trends for the year as December is always the highest grossing period for charges such as commercial rates etc."
