Flour Power - The Story of The Blaa follows the over 300 year lifespan of the Blaa, from its inception in the late 17th century, its role as a source of food for Waterford city’s malnourished school children in the 1800s, to its present day status as a staple in the city and county’s daily diet. Flour Power is the work of programme maker Cyril Stack who has spent the last three months interviewing Blaa bakers, historians, and Blaa lovers to document the unique appeal of this floury marvel.

In 1655 an order was issued by the Cromwellian government in Waterford to expel all members of a religious sect, known colloquially as the Quakers. Their refusal to accept any priesthood or liturgy, their silent meetings and their rejection of oath-taking made the Quakers personae non gratae in the city.  The Quakers however stayed, and came to dominate Waterford’s trade in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Many Waterford People still remember the Waterford to Tramore Railway line with great pride and affection. The line was unique, it was 7 ¼ miles long and unconnected to any other line. It opened in 1853 and was operated independently until 1925 when reluctantly it became part of the Great Southern Railways and was ultimately closed in 1960 as CIE restructured Ireland’s railways.
