The woman was unaware she and her family had been holding onto the winning Lotto Match 5 + Bonus for several weeks, and only realised their fortune when she decided to get a bundle of old lottery tickets scanned.

The lucky family syndicate made up of the woman, her husband and adult children visited the National Lottery Winners room on Tuesday to claim their prize.

The Quick Pick ticket was purchased on Saturday 21st October at the Tesco store in Kilbarry.

The unnamed woman said she was unaware of the win for a number of weeks after the draw, and only made the discovery on her weekly shopping trip to Tesco.

She said: “I’m a divil for not checking my old lottery tickets. I had a bundle of them and decided to get them checked when I was doing my Tesco shop. The girl behind the counter pulled me aside and she whispered that I was after winning big. It was another job entirely convincing my family that we had won. They were sure I was having a senior citizen moment so they all had to check the ticket for themselves just to be certain!”

The lucky syndicate wish to keep their win private.

Discussing their spending plans for their Lotto windfall, the winning mother said, “It’s a lovely amount to win and it’s even better to share it among the family. It will give myself and my husband a lot of comfort over the next few years and we’ll look to make some home improvements. Our children are only starting out in life and I’m sure that the money will be well used for house deposits and cars which will give them an amazing start in life.”
