Viking Sword to be officially unveiled today

The longest wood sculpture in the world will be officially unveiled in Waterford city this afternoon (Friday).

Norwegian Ambassador to Ireland, Ms Else Berit Eikeland, and Moe Dunford, star of Vikings, will unveil the giant 23 metre long Viking sword in Bailey’s New Street.

As part of a torch light ceremony the sword will be given the name ‘Dragon Slayer’.

Located in the heart of the Viking Triangle, the Dragon Slayer, was created by renowned local sculptor John Hayes from Special Branch Carvings.

John says it's a humbling day for him:

"I'm the one people are coming up to and congratulating but what today is for me is for everyone who made this possible; when I came up with this mad idea, they believed in it ..I hope everyone will enjoy it and treasure it, and they seem to be".

The ceremony takes place at 4.30. It is a public event and all are welcome!
