Just before Christmas in 1917, a terrible tragedy struck many families in Waterford when two steamships were torpedoed off the Irish coast within two days of each other. Of the 83 people killed aboard the SS Formby and the SS Coningbeg , 67 of them were from Waterford.
The steamships were returning from Liverpool at the time. However it wasn't until after Christmas that the tragic news was confirmed. Events to mark the centenary of the sinking of the SS Formby and SS Conigbeg took place in Waterford earlier this month.
Sink on Sight will broadcast at 6 p.m. this evening on WLR.
