Waterford Mountain Rescue say a fully charged phone is vital for hikers

Teams across the country dealt with 154 injury cases and ran search operations for 88 people who got lost while hiking and climbing.

Paul Hennessy is Spokesperson for Tramore Cliff Rescue and Waterford Mountain Rescue and says that, among other things, a fully charged mobile phone is a critical safety tool.

He says that even on an apparent 'nice' day, there can be dangers.

"The best thing to do is let people know where you're going, what time and when you expect to be back" he says, "I'm in Tramore and it's sunny, but I can't see the Comeraghs because there's low cloud... Fog could come in very quickly and people could get disoriented."

"It's also important to have your phone fully charged, that's how you contact us, by dialling 999. We can also located you using GPS."
