Waterford Minister of State John Halligan has called for a reasoned debated in the upcoming referendum on abortion.

Waterford Minister of State John Halligan has called for the full decriminalisation of abortion to be considered in the context of the upcoming referendum on whether to remove the Eighth Amendment from the Constitution.

He said the State had 'shirked its responsibilities' on the abortion issue for 'far too long and we cannot persist with a situation where girls and women are fearful to access healthcare or other services post abortion, whether they've had that abortion in another country or by taking pills at home.

John Halligan said we need to step up to the plate on this public health evidence and introduce decisive legislation that protects women's health and their human rights.
