The much loved actor, who played Martin Crane in the hit show, died at a hospice in Chicago aged 77.
Mahoney was born in Blackpool in the UK, and moved to the US when he was 19. He discovered acting relatively late in life; serving in the US army and working as a professor of English prior to that.
He played Martin Crane in the multi-award winning sitcom for 11 years until the show’s end in 1994. His last TV appearance was in “Foyle’s War” in 2015. Mahoney was also a prolific theatre actor, winning a Tony Award in 1986.
He was not married and didn’t have children.
