Extended opening hours to be introduced in emergency accommodation in Waterford .

Emergency accommodation in Waterford will remain open 24 hours a day during the cold snap.

The 'Beast from the East' is expected to bring snow today, with storm Emma turning it into a blizzard by Thursday.

Last night saw sub zero temperatures nationwide, and a Status Orange weather snow-ice warning comes into effect for many eastern counties this afternoon.

A status yellow snow and ice warning has been issued for Waterford and other counties in the South East.

A unit was opened in Waterford City Centre before Christmas to give rough sleepers somewhere warm and secure to spend the night.

It closes each day from 9.30am until 9.30pm however it will remain open from tonight until Saturday morning.

Waterford Council says the situation will be reviewed again on Friday.
