Marathon runner reaches Bunmahon during her 'Lap of the Map'

A 65 year old woman who is running the coast of Ireland for the RNLI has arrived in Bunmahon in County Waterford.

Mary Hickey left Arklow on the 1st of January and has covered the equivalent of 52 marathons since then raising in excess of €25,000.

She left Helvick Head this morning and told WLR News why she decided to start her run on New Years Day. "The reason why I've decided to go in winter because when they [the RNLI] get the call out they have to go, no matter what the weather is doing."

"2018 marks my 50th year in athletics. At the age of 65, I am now three quarters away through my epic journey, running and walking around the entire coast of Ireland.

"I left Arklow on New Years morning 2018, and headed north on roads nearest the coast covering the lap of the map in an anti clockwise direction.

"My journey, which will take almost 4 months, is being done in aid of the RNLI Ireland. All money raised will be split between all of the Lifeboat Stations in Ireland.

Mary is hoping to raise another 10k before she finishes in 12 days time. "We need to train and kit out another few volunteers to save lives." You can donate here

Tomorrow Mary will be heading for Tramore before taking a rest day on Thursday.
