A Waterford Principal says equal pay is the burning issue for teachers.

A Waterford Principal says equal pay is the burning issue for teachers.

Teachers who qualified after 2011 are on different payscales and get different allowances to their colleagues who qualified before then.

Yesterday the three unions passed an emergency motion calling for talks with the Government on pay inequality to conclude by early May.

Tim O'Byrne is the Secretary of Waterford City INTO. He says all teachers are asking that they be paid fairly and equally for the work that they are doing.

Schools in Waterford and across the country were closed for three days because of the snow during Storm Emma.

He says primary schools will have to make individual decisions on how they will make up the snow days.

They would say it is an act of God. He said it would not have been practical to open schools over Easter as a lot of pupils would have been away on holidays.

Tim O'Bryne says there is no mechanism there at the moment that explains if a teacher is out on a snow day, what is to happen. He says it does not look like schools will be forced to make them up.
