The owner of a Waterford supermarket has given his support to a ‘Shop and Drop’ initiative aimed at raising awareness over excess plastic usage.
Shoppers in Waterford are being encouraged to remove plastic packaging and leave it at the cash register this Saturday as part of a Day of Action organised by Friends of the Earth.
Colin Jephson is Director of Ardkeen Quality Food Store in Waterford City.
He says he hopes it will encourage manufacturers to keep plastic use to a minimum.
Colin says his store have taken a number of steps to be environmentally conscious. He says they try to have paper bags alongside plastic bags. Their juice and coffee cups are compostable.
He says about 80 percent of the waste that they generate goes to either compostable or recyclable facilities.
