Members of the Waterford City Fire Service attended the incident, which happened in the John's Lane area some time between 12 and 1pm.
Bord Gais were contacted and a crew arrived on site.
The area was made safe by the attending emergency services, and a number of the surrounding buildings were evacuated.
The area has since been reopened to the public.
