Kilmeaden Post Office to close

Kilmeaden Post Office to close

It has emerged Kilmeaden Post Office is set to close despite a long campaign to keep it open.

It's postmaster made the decision after finding out it does not fit the criteria for funding as part of a scheme setup by the Minister for Communications.

€50m is being put towards the post office network by Denis Naughten but Kilmeaden is deemed to be catered for under the scheme.

Fianna Fáil's John O'Leary is a councillor for the area and says it's a huge blow for the village.

"Kilmeaden would not come under the criteria (of the scheme) because there was a post office within a 15 kilometer distance and the population is under 500 houses," he said.

"We met with the directors of An Post on a number of occasions and we impressed upon them the hardship this would cause. It means now that people from Dunhill, Kill, Butlerstown and Fenor will have to travel over 10 miles to their nearest post office."
