Canvassing on roundabouts under spotlight at Joint Policing Committee

Canvassing on Waterford city roundabouts may be disallowed in future election and referendum campaigns.

Groups involved in the Repeal the Eighth campaign demonstrated on them throughout Waterford ahead of the vote last month.

The roundabout at Plunkett Station off Rice Bridge was singled out at a meeting of Waterford's Joint Policing Committee, with charity groups doing bucket collections having already been barred from collecting there.

And City Superintendent Chris Delaney says gardaí will be monitoring it for future campaigns:

"There are clear issues as regards people paying attention on that roundabout, which is challenging when you're trying to manoeuvre it at the best of times. We will certainly look at ...and we'll have to deal with each case on its merits."

Chris Delaney says most complaints during the referendum campaign were based around postering.

"There were some general complaints about the campaign itself, postering and people had strong views on it. We very much applied a common sense approach to it, we were conscious it was very emotive. The guards were very tailored in their enforcement approach to it."
