More proactivity in this country is needed, this is the message that Waterford City and County Councillor Jim Griffin for listeners.
Cllr Griffin who is also a member of the Coast Guard said we are not prepared for the extreme weather we have seen when it comes to our beaches and parks.
“We have no enforcement, no authority and I suppose when we try to get the Gardaí to come to these situations, they are under extreme pressure as well and they are not always ok with the bylaws and the rules and regulations in and around all various different types of activities on our beaches. ”
The Councillor who has commended local authorities for their work said that the Irish Coast Guard has been alerted of a number of burns in other districts across Ireland while underlining that these burns they are hearing about are not children related, they are adults.
“In one instance the particular person up in Westport said the canister ignited as he went to handle it, just to twist it on to the gas BBQ.”
According to Jim, people leaving a mess behind after unruly beach parties is unacceptable.
“We can’t have people going out there and throwing beach parties and getting rowdy and unruly leaving a mess behind it’s just not acceptable, we don’t see on the content and we don’t see it when we go on holidays particularly.”
