Waterford TD David Cullinane has been selected as chairman of the committee to select Sinn Féin’s presidential candidate.
The party announced it’s decision to field a candidate against incumbent Michael D. Higgins earlier this afternoon.
It’ll be the the only other major party in the race – after Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Labour said they’d be supporting the President Higgins bid bid for a second term.
Speaking to WLR News Deputy Cullinane said it would allow the party to set out it’s vision for Ireland.
“I think it’s healthy for democracy that people have a choice, that there is an election,” he said. “We in Sinn Féin feel we have something to offer and to bring to the table.
“It allows parties to set out their vision for Ireland for the next seven years and beyond.”
