The funeral of Kilmacow musician Damien O'Brien takes place in Waterford City

Hundreds of people gathered in St. Mary's Church in Ballygunner this afternoon for the funeral of well-known musician Damien O'Brien.

The 27-year-old Kilmacow native died following an assault in Waterford City earlier this month.

In his sermon, Father John Tracy described Damien as a "young, talented man taken from his family in such a callous way."

Musical tribute was paid during the ceremony by a number of his fellow musicians and band mates.

In their eulogy, Damien's sisters described how music was his passion and highlighted his close relationship with his father who passed away five years ago.

They said he had touched the hearts of so many people and that in addition to his considerable ability as a pianist, he would be remembered for his gentleness and kindheartedness.

Bandmate and first cousin Ger Reid spoke of their shared musical journey and how music gave them the ability to express themselves.

Damien O'Brien was laid to rest in Ballygunner Cemetery following requiem mass this afternoon.
