Former Waterford resident pleads guilty to terrorism charges in the US

An Algerian-born Irish man, who was initially arrested in Waterford in 2010, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in the US.

Last year, 53 year-old Ali Charaf Damache, became the first foreigner to be extradited to the US on terror charges under President Trump.

He left Ireland after his successful legal challenge to his extradition, but was arrested in Spain.

Damache, who had an address at High Street in Waterford City, was wanted in the States on charges that he conspired with an American woman known as 'Jihad Jane' to recruit people online to carry out attacks in Europe and South Asia.

He pleaded guilty this week to conspiring to provide material support and resources to terrorists.

US officials say he's agreed to a 15-year prison sentence as part of his guilty plea, and will be returned to Ireland or Algeria after his prison term.
