Tramore August Racing Festival kicks off this week

Tramore August Racing Festival kicks off this week

The one million euro refurbishment of the Waterford and Tramore racecourse will be showcased to the public this week as the August festival of racing gets underway on Thursday.

Major work has been carried out over the past year at the seaside track including a new entrance building, revamped stable yard and many other new facilities.

This year the festival features a style evening, family fun day, corporate networking and of course 28 races over the four days.

General Manager of the racecourse Sue Phelan says the festival has a broad appeal: "Our tagline for quite some time now has been 'much more than racing'. That's why our small track maybe has the advantage over some of the bigger tracks, in that we can appeal to different audiences."

Sue Phelan says there's generous prize-money on offer with an overall purse this year of €380,000. The 28 races, 7 races every day, four days of racing, it wouldn't happen without our sponsors.

20,000 people are expected for the festival. Sue says it's a great opportunity for networking: "We really appeal to all sorts. The social clubs in the factories have really got behind us as well. The corporate hospitality over the four days, is another way to meet and mingle and entertain staff or clients."
