Kilmeaden Post Office is to close today

Campaigners against the closure of post offices in Waterford say it will leave many rural residents with long commutes to their nearest office.

Kilmeaden Post Office is set to close today and will be followed by Leamybrien and Ballinamult.

An Post say its necessary to secure the future of the network.

Bill Flanagan is from the City, but lives in Kilmeaden and says he has seen a significant amount of local services close over the years.

"I was on the building of the cheese factory in 1963 and that closed," he said. "The shopping centre is closed, the post office is closed, the Long Haul Bar is closed, the Old Kilmeaden was knocked and the Cosy Thatch Pub closed as well."

Fianna Fail Councillor in the area John O'Leary says that the community's fight to save the Post Office will continue.

"We got on this case 12 months ago, and we've been hammering An Post and the government since," he said. "We're not finished yet. It's our intention to appeal the decision, because we think we have a unique case. What we have is the owner of Centra, who's a postmaster in another jurisdiction, and   he's quite willing to take over the post office here."
