Members of the public will be able learn about traditional thatching in Waterford this weekend.

Members of the public will be able learn about traditional thatching in Waterford this weekend.

Waterford has over 170 thatch houses spread right across the County with a high density in Dunmore East.

The event at Dock Road in Dunmore East at noon on Saturday is free, however anyone interested in attending is asked to book in advance with Waterford Council.

The event will take place on Saturday the 8th of September at 12 midday.

Master thatcher Hugh O’ Neill   will speak about the art of thatching at  a house that Hugh is working on at the moment -  Grendon,  Dock Road, Dunmore East.

Hugh  will speak about the materials, tools and techniques used in thatching and his experiences over the years.   Rose Ryall Conservation Officer will  talk about conservation and funding.

This event is  part of a series of talks organised by Waterford City and County Council to raise awareness of the wonderful and diverse  built heritage we have in Waterford.
