Waterford Green Party Chairperson says government measures to ban single-use plastics are only a small step down the road

Waterford Green Party Chairperson says government measures to ban single-use plastics are only a small step down the road

The Chairperson of the Green Party in Waterford is calling on the government to support a wider ban on single-use plastics.

Government departments will no longer purchase single-use plastic cups, cutlery and straws, the Minister for Climate Action and the Environment has announced.

In addition, the purchase of such plastics will be banned for all Government agencies and schools from the end of March.

The ban is part of Government efforts to “lead the way” in limiting the use of single-use plastics ahead of proposals from the EU to cut down on plastic pollution.

Marc Ó Cathasaigh says he welcomes development but says it's only a small step.

"The Green Party have a waste reduction bill which has passed three stages of the Oireachtas," he says. "On the one hand the government are saying that they're banning single use plastics in government departments, but on the other hand, they're blocking our legislation."
