An unofficial Black Lives Matter protest takes place in Waterford

Hundreds of people turned out in Waterford City this afternoon to take part in an anti-racism demonstration.

It's been sparked by the death of unarmed black man George Floyd in the US after a police officer knelt on his neck.

A vigil organised by Waterford Against Racism was cancelled earlier this week for public safety reasons.

This afternoon's protest is not affiliated with any group.

The group are marching from the Clock Tower to the Courthouse on Catherine Street.

Earlier the Health Minister urged people to write to the American Embassy to make their views known on the killing of George Floyd rather than turn out to protest today.

Gardai say organisers of the Black Lives Matter protests taking place across the country today could be risking the health of people taking part and the wider community.

They say organisers of today's protests could be breaking Covid 19 regulations.
