Waterford Footballers Concede Antrim Game

Waterford Footballers Concede Antrim Game

The Allianz Football League meeting of Waterford and Antrim has been called off as Waterford have decided to concede the fixture - citing concerns for the players amid growing coronavirus rates in the North.

A number of the panel made it known that they would not travel for the game due to the concerns around covid rates in the north.

Similarly, several of the payers had been informed by their employers that they would need to complete a 14-day isolation period if they were to travel to Northern Ireland.

The Waterford County Board had requested that the fixture be moved to a more covid safe environment in the Republic - but this request was not met by the Antrim County Board.

Waterford GAA have made it known that this decision has been reached with payer welfare and safety issues in mind.

A statement early this morning from Waterford GAA outlined that the decision had been reached after much consideration. The previous fixture with London GAA also fell victim to the covid-19 crisis, which leaves the team in a vulnerable position heading in to the Championship tie with Limerick.

The focus for the team will now shift to the Championship meeting with Limerick next weekend in the Fraher Field. Having no games under their belt heading into that game, it will be an even taller order than it was before. But with the concerns around covid-19, the decision to concede the game is the safest one.
